Rivers Fiji

During our honeymoon in September, my husband and I booked a trip with Rivers Fiji to raft the Upper Navua. We knew we couldn't pass it up when we heard our fellow resort guests raving about it.

During the dry season, rafting the Upper Navua means navigating through a deep narrow gorge with rapids up to level 3. We were informed that during the rainy season, the water is about 40 feet higher, and the trip much more adventurous (but not as pretty), with a higher degree of difficulty. The cliffs are breath-taking, along with more than a dozen waterfalls (Our favorite was "Two Women Push Each Other Waterfall"), lush vegetation and isolated villages. You'll also get to swim through a mini cave under one of the waterfalls - a memorable experience!

Perhaps what made this trip so incredible were the river guides. They come from a nearby village on the river and grew up in the bush. The first time they were offered lunch by the man who runs Rivers Fiji, they made sandwiches with everything from oreos to ham, cheese, mustard and peanut
butter, as they'd never encountered the idea of a sandwich before. Our guide Moses told us tales of hunting wild boar with his dogs and stalking fruitbats for dinner to guiding Jessica Simpson and her entourage of 6 other rafts with camera crews down the river. We learned more about Fiji on the river with him than we would have in any village 'tour.' He enabled us to be were confident in our rafting skills, yet relaxed and laughing enough to really enjoy ourselves.

The trip to get to the river is a long and bumpy one (with a juice and banana bread break), as you'll be riding in a 4-wheel bus over decades-old logging roads. However, it's worth it. Rivers Fiji has exclusive rights to raft and kayak the river. They have a partnership with the local villages so that the Fijians benefit financially, and the environment benefits by the villagers looking out for the river and its ecosystem.

The Rivers Fiji Office is located in Pacific Harbor, 40 minutes west of Suva and about 2 hours east of Nadi.

The Top Family Activities on a Fiji Vacation

Fiji is one of the more popular tourist destinations for a family vacation in a tropical setting. Many people do not realize the numerous activities to be taken advantage of for the whole family on a Fiji vacation. Regardless of age or the size of your family, there are a multitude of activities and places for all travelers to enjoy.

The ‘Koro Sun Resort' means “village in the sun”. If you are looking for a superb family destination filled with great activities for the whole family, this may be the right choice for you. The nature activities are especially worth noting! Sea kayaking, diving, deep sea fishing, snorkeling, and sports such as volleyball and tennis and swimming are all available at this village. If you prefer dancing and pristine golf courses, this type of activity is also available here.

If you are traveling with children, these activities may or may not be what they are looking for to entertain them. There is a vast array of crowd pleasing activities for kids at The Koro Kids Club. This place is a fascinating adventure in itself. You and your children can fill your days with fun and educational activities such as hiking, island exploration and snorkeling. If you are in the mood for more sedate activities, there are arts and crafts, weaving, sand construction, and t-shirt painting. Babysitting services are also available in the evening so that mom and dad can enjoy some adult time together.

For those families that love a good quest on the open sea, Tui Tai Adventure Cruises are fantastic! The ship sails between Vanua Levu, Taveuni, Kioa and Koro. Along this voyage family activities include snorkeling, bike riding, swimming, fishing, diving, and - perhaps one of the most memorable activities - dolphin watching. The dolphins enjoy swimming along side the boat during the exploration, so an up-close and personal encounter with these beautiful creatures is usually a high point for you and your children.

Private time for both children and adults, and separate memorable escapades for each, can be important during your stay in Fiji. If this is something you are concerned with, Kid's Sea Camp is something you may want to experience. Here, kids get to learn about marine life while taking part in a lot of hands-on activities as well. It is an educational camp, but allows for such exciting activities as snorkeling, scuba diving and swimming in a nurturing and guarded environment.

The Castaway Island Resort also has much to offer a family looking for some time getting to know others in their own age groups. Here, there are two separate areas specializing in children activities and teen activities for your Fiji vacation. This list of intriguing activities is what your kids can look forward to if you stay at the Castaway Island Resort, while you take some time to engage in adult activities:

  • Kids Club Activities:

    • Three legged race
    • Coral collecting relay race

These are only the top family activities that one can choose, but most assuredly this is not by any means an exhaustive list. No matter where you go on the island of Fiji during your vacation, a family can find interesting things to do, depending on the length of your vacation stay and the budget you have planned.

A Fiji vacation is a memorable adventure in everyone's life. The beauty of the lush green scenery, the rolling hills and the panoramic views can be mesmerizing and enchanting. The options for taking part in the many activities are limitless, and the impact that a vacation such as this can provide your family for many years to come is overwhelming and grand.
