Online Quotes & Reservations From The: Pleasant Holidays Online Booking Engine “Explore Fiji, experience the culture” Rivers FijiDuring our honeymoon in September, my husband and I booked a trip with Rivers Fiji to raft the Upper Navua. We knew we couldn't pass it up when we heard our fellow resort guests raving about it.
During the dry season, rafting the Upper Navua means navigating through a deep narrow gorge with rapids up to level 3. We were informed that during the rainy season, the water is about 40 feet higher, and the trip much more adventurous (but not as pretty), with a higher degree of difficulty. The cliffs are breath-taking, along with more than a dozen waterfalls (Our favorite was "Two Women Push Each Other Waterfall"), lush vegetation and isolated villages. You'll also get to swim through a mini cave under one of the waterfalls - a memorable experience!
Perhaps what made this trip so incredible were the river guides. They come from a nearby village on the river and grew up in the bush. The first time they were offered lunch by the man who runs Rivers Fiji, they made sandwiches with everything from oreos to ham, cheese, mustard and peanut butter, as they'd never encountered the idea of a sandwich before. Our guide Moses told us tales of hunting wild boar with his dogs and stalking fruitbats for dinner to guiding Jessica Simpson and her entourage of 6 other rafts with camera crews down the river. We learned more about Fiji on the river with him than we would have in any village 'tour.' He enabled us to be were confident in our rafting skills, yet relaxed and laughing enough to really enjoy ourselves.
The trip to get to the river is a long and bumpy one (with a juice and banana bread break), as you'll be riding in a 4-wheel bus over decades-old logging roads. However, it's worth it. Rivers Fiji has exclusive rights to raft and kayak the river. They have a partnership with the local villages so that the Fijians benefit financially, and the environment benefits by the villagers looking out for the river and its ecosystem.
The Rivers Fiji Office is located in Pacific Harbor, 40 minutes west of Suva and about 2 hours east of Nadi. |
