Malaysia Travel

The two distinct parts of Malaysia, separated from each other by the South China Sea, share a largely similar landscape in that both West and East Malaysia feature coastal plains rising to often densely forested hills and mountains, the highest of which is Mount Kinabalu at 4,095.2 metres (13,435.7 ft) on the island of Borneo. The local climate is equatorial and characterised by the annual southwest (April to October) and northeast (October to February) monsoons.

Malaysia Attractions

Cherating: If you're a leatherback turtle, you'll think the best beach in the world is just north of Cherating. Every spring and summer, these giant sea creatures come ashore to lay their eggs, so if you're in town from May to June you might catch a look at the hatchlings. Meanwhile, during the turtles' off-season, international windsurfing and water-board enthusiasts gather annually for competitions at this world-famous spot.

Penang Museum and Art Gallery (Penang): A slick display of Penang's colonial history and multicultural heritage, this place is chock-full of fascinating tidbits about the people, places, and events of this curious island.

State Museums of Malacca: This small city has more museums than any other city in the country, with some unusual displays such as kites and Malaysian literature.

Malaysia Activities

Tanjung Rhu (Langkawi): Perhaps the most stunning beach in Malaysia, this wide gorgeous stretch of white sand hugs a crystal-clear, deep blue cove.

Kumpung Juara (Tioman Island): This beach is what they mean when they say isolated. Be prepared to live like Robinson Crusoe -- in tiny huts, many with no electricity at all. But, oh, the beach! Most visitors don't get to this part of the island, so many times you can have it all to yourself.
