Amalfi Coast Overview
The Amalfi Coast, located on the southern side of the Sorrentine Peninsula, is the most well known resort town of the region. This stretch of coastline begins from Positano and extends to Vietri sul Mare, almost reaching the Isle of Capri.
It is known for its rugged terrain, breathtaking views, natural beauty, and vibrant colors. Until the 40km main road, known as the Amalfitana, was built, the Lattari Mountains made the Amalfi Coast nearly inaccessible. It was once a maritime republic of 70,000 rivaling Pisa, Genoa, and Venice; it is now filled with small fishing villages that are clustered along the front face of the mountains while villas, churches, and corner shops climb up the mountain slopes.
Like many cities in Italy, the Amalfi Coast is full of museums that proudly showcase an ancient Roman and Greek influenced heritage and culture. Sightseeing around most towns can be done on foot, buses, rail links, car hires, Vespas, or boat services. Chartering a boat is perfect for a picnic on the beach along the coastline. Make sure to check out the little cove near De Filippo’s island
