It is hard to describe the wonderful adventure we had when we went with Carlos to snorkel the Hol Chan Preserve off of Caye Caulker Island, Belize. Carlos was funny and the perfect host. He was very proud of his heritage and the excellent measures Belize has taken to keep their reefs in pristine condition. Being an environmentalist myself, I found this to be very inspiring. He was able to spot while flying across the reef, a turtle or spot that needed closer scrutiny. We were not disappointed. On one such stop we got up close and personal with a large spotted sea turtle, who was just as curious about us as we were him. Shark and ray alley was fantastic. Eagle rays and manta rays were abundant and circled under our feet and around our bodies. Nursing sharks were brought to us, by our leader, so we could feel how coarse their hides were. We saw a barracuda as well...didn't pet that sucker tho'. Schools of yellow fin and grouper were everywhere. I had never been snorkeling again, but when (not if) I go back I will not only go with Carlos, but I will schedule more than one outing.
