Founded in 1769, Liberia is the capital of Guanacaste province. Its narrow streets are lined with charming old adobe homes, many of which have ornate stone accents on their facades, carved wooden doors, and aged red-tile roofs. The central plaza, which occupies 2 square blocks in front of the church, is still the city's social hub and principal gathering spot. The central plaza in Liberia is a great place to people-watch, especially in the early evenings and on weekends. Grab a seat on one of the many concrete benches, or join the families and young lovers as they leisurely stroll around. If you venture off for a few blocks in any direction, you'll see fine examples of the classic Spanish colonial architecture.

Guanacaste
Guanacaste offers some of Costa Rica's best resorts and nature parks.  Visitors enjoy the ultimate seclusion along miles of virtually untouched Pacific beaches.

Arenal
View the spectacular eruptions of the active Arenal Volcano, located just a few hours from San Jose.  This region also contains the Tabacon Hot Springs, a natural spa created by the volcano's heat.

Monteverde
For hiking and brid-watching, visit the one-of-a-kind Monteverde Cloud Forest in the Central Mountains.  It is home to hundreds of species of mammals, birds and butterflies.

Puntarenas
Puntarenas' famous volcanic black sand beaches are close to San Jose and are a great place to begin day trips to the Monteverde Cloud Forest or the Gulf of Nicoya.
