Enthralling Maya ruins await amid rainforest canopies. Awe-inspiring scuba diving and eco-adventures are on offer along the world's second-longest barrier reef. The 1000-foot-diameter Blue Hole is so big and so blue that it can be seen from outer space. To make the most of your visit, consider domestic flights within Belize.

Belize (pronounced /bəˈliːz/) is a country in Central America and is the only Central American country where English is an official language. Belize has a diverse society, composed of many languages and cultures. The Belizean territory was once part of the Mayan and Spanish empires before becoming a British colony and for more than a century until 1973, the colonial territory was known as British Honduras. The country became an independent nation in 1981.

Daves Travel Pages - Belize - Travelogue

Belize has a tropical climate with pronounced wet and dry seasons, although there are significant variations in weather patterns by region. Temperatures vary according to elevation, proximity to the coast, and the moderating effects of the northeast trade winds off the Caribbean. Average temperatures in the coastal regions range from 24 °C in January to 27 °C in July. Temperatures are slightly higher inland, except for the southern highland plateaus, such as the Mountain Pine Ridge, where it is noticeably cooler year round. Overall, the seasons are marked more by differences in humidity and rainfall than in temperature.

With mangrove swamps rimming much of the mainland coast, the best beaches in Belize can be found in the cayes, with Ambergris having the best. Though they tend to be narrow, the beaches are beautiful and provide ready access to Caribbean waters. Beautiful Laughing Bird Caye is a mini-atoll; a small reef protects the white-sand beach from the surf and effectively turns the water here into a giant natural swimming pool. Placencia Peninsula is the mainland's best beach.

Belize Untamed
High tea and tarantulas. Private island hideouts and sharks as long as limos. Treehouse suites and waterfalls in pitch-black caves. Belize may offer a little more luxury these days, but the adventure it serves up is as real and as raw as ever.
Jaguars, Toucans and Talking Kangaroos
On safari in Belize with a visionary eco-tour outfit -- This story begins in 1972, when a Long Island-based outdoors writer named Nick Karas takes his 12-year-old son Ken out of school to go on a safari the entire length of Africa, from Cairo to the Cape. A precocious lad, Ken brings along a 16 mm camera to film the adventure -- and a career is born.

Placencia Springs Back
In the fall of 2001, Hurricane Iris slammed into Belize. The 13-foot-high storm surge that swept over the southern village of Placencia uprooted trees, leveled houses and hotels, wrecked boats and severely damaged the funky beach town's claim to fame - a meandering ribbon of sidewalk that serves as its main street.
Sweet & Sassy
Three years ago, Carol Milnes and Hannah Cowell left England for Belize after reading about it in a magazine. They made their way to the funky little beach town of Placencia, where they opened a bar.

A perfect Belize Vacation

After numerous reports from friends that have taken the plunge and hoped on a jet to visit the Central American country located in the heart of the Caribbean known as Belize I finally began my own research into this unique little country. I began by speaking to those friends I recalled mentioning how great of a time they had on their Belize vacations and began a list of recommended activities and tours they had enjoyed as well as top Belize travel packages. I then migrated my research onto the Internet to begin reading about Belize. I was stunned at the variety and shear volume of activities to participate in.

I begin discovering more about the numerous ancient Mayan Ruins that are speckled through out the country of Belize. Since this trip would encompass almost three weeks and my husband and our two daughters ages nine and fourteen I certainly wanted to include a Belize Mayan ruin stop on the itinerary. My husband is an avid scuba diver so the endless diving opportunities that abound in Belize’s 180 mile barrier reef where enough to convince him that a holiday in Belize was the way to go for our family. Not to mention he’s a bit fanatical about Fly Fishing as well and the Belize Fishing is renowned as a world class saltwater flats fishing destination especially on the island atolls of Turneffe Flats and Glovers Reef.

Our oldest daughter is a aspiring botanist and can grow just about anything at home so her interest were turned towards some time spent in the Belize rain forest on a Eco Tour of the jungles, waterfalls, and the amazing wild life that exist in Belize. And of course her younger sister is a bit of a dare devil and was certainly up for the Zip Line adventures that were optional in our Belize Eco tour segment of our adventure. As for myself sea kayaking the uninhabited island and absorbing some needed rest under the sun with the comfort of the Caribbean breeze caressing my face sounded all too good for me.

After much research and debate we ended up going with a recommended booking service that a group of friends used for their last Belize vacation called
Belize Vacation Services - Their knowledge, suggestions and over-all professionalism was first class and they planned our families Belize adventure perfectly for us. Everything we mentioned we wished to experience was handled for us and we felt we had been placed in the hands of fun and knowledgeable professionals for each segment or our three-week adventure. After the wonderful experiences we had in Belize we can’t wait to get back again to explore Belize even further. We enjoyed Belize so much that my husband and I are entertaining a condo purchase in this little nation as a permanent get away for our family in the Caribbean.
